Did You Know: Ninjago
Since I’m such a big fan of Ninjago, I decided to make a list of weird facts you may or may not know about this television series. I also put in a few of my own thoughts, too:
- All the seasons (and special) have names. Season one is called Rise of the Snakes, two is called Rise of the Spinjitzu Master, three is called Rebooted, four is called the Tournament of Elements, five is called Possession, six is called Skybound, the special is called Day of the Departed, season seven is called the Hands of Time, and eight- which hasn’t come out yet- is called Sons of Garmadon.
- The LEGO Ninjago Movie isn’t related to the show, except for the fact that they share the same characters. Even though the names of the characters and their elements stay the same, their looks and personalities change.
- Sadly, the Ninjago producers decided to change the ninja’s looks to those of the movie characters so that new fans can make the connection easier. I’m not sure if the ninja’s personalities will change, too, but I truly hope not…
- Seasons one through five are the only seasons available on Netflix.
- This isn’t really a fact, I just thought it was interesting: how does Zane have elemental powers? In Possession, Sensei Garmadon explained to the ninja that they all descended from the first elemental masters, and that was how they got their powers. Zane, however, was built by Dr. Julien, and didn’t descend from anybody. Also, I’ve noticed when Zane uses his elemental power, it comes from his heart. Maybe his heart is made of magical ice from the original elemental master, but that’s just one of many theories I’ve come up with. If Zane didn’t descend from the first master of ice, then does that mean someone else out there in the Ninjago world has the same powers as him?
- The theme song for each season of Ninjago ends with a winking face. This is the face of the main ninja of the season.
- Kai’s eyebrows in the pilot episodes are different from the ones he has in all the other episodes.
- Cole has been mistakenly given the voice of two other ninja. The first time- in the first episode of the first season- Cole said “We can train tomorrow,” and it was in Kai’s voice. The next time was in Rebooted, and the episode Blackout. Cole’s statement was, “More like Techno Wu!” I didn’t realize it was the wrong voice until I listened more closely. Jay said something as soon as Cole was done talking, and I realized the previous statement from Cole was in the blue ninja’s voice.
- Slowly, the main characters are all going through major transformations: Lloyd was the first, when Tomorrow’s Tea caused him to change from a young child to a teen (Child’s Play, Rise of the Snakes). Garmadon went next, changing from Lord to Sensei in the last episode of the second season (Rise of the Spinjitzu Master, Rise of the Spinjitzu Master). Wu was turned into the evil Techno Wu and Cyrus Borg was turned into the Overborg when they were captured by Pythor and the Digital Overlord (Blackout, Rebooted), both returning to normal soon after. Zane undertook the next major transformation (the Titanium Ninja, Rebooted) when he died and rebuilt himself out of titanium. Next, I count P.I.X.A.L., who was scrapped and moved to Zane’s head (Versus, the Tournament of Elements). In Temple on Haunted Hill (Possession), Cole is transformed into a ghost after staying in the haunted temple of the deceased Sensei Yang for too long. In the previous episode, Stiix and Stones, Nya discovers her mother was the elemental master of water, making her the water ninja. Later, Lloyd becomes an old man due to his wish for wisdom (Wishmasters, Skybound), which is later undone. The next person to undergo transformation is Cole (again), when he passes through a portal and returns to flesh and blood in Day of the Departed. I’m not aware of any transformations after this point- I haven’t actually seen Skybound, Day of the Departed, or the Hands of Time, since they aren’t on Netflix- but I may be wrong.
- If my math is correct, there are 101 episodes of Ninjago total, including the six mini episodes before season one, the twenty mini episodes between Day of the Departed and the Hands of Time, and the two pilot episodes.
- Cyrus Borg had to try sixteen times to get P.I.X.A.L. right, and even then, she still struggled with an AIE-ES (artificial intelligence enhancer-emotion suppressor) chip. Dr. Julien only had to try twice to get Zane right.
- If the ninja aged normally, Wu and Garmadon should be ancient (their father was the First Spinjitzu Master, who created Ninjago), Lloyd should be in his twenties at least (his parents are Garmadon and Misako), and Zane should be around forty or fifty (Dr. Julien was in his forties when he created Zane, and Zane became one of the ninja after Julien died in his eighties).
- In every Ninjago LEGO set with Lloyd’s hair, it’s actually Garmadon’s.
- When Wu was young, he had the same hairstyle as Jay.
- Once again, this is just something I found interesting: how did Zane not know he was a robot? When Zane turned on his memory switch (Tick Tock, Rise of the Snakes), his memory showed him as having a blank, white body. If Zane took off his suit (which he would have to do whenever he put on his pajamas), he would see his white body and chest panel.
- The only two ninja who didn’t officially reach their full potential are Skylor and Lloyd.
- In Rise of the Great Devourer, Rise of the Snakes, Wu followed Pythor when he awakened the Great Devourer. When the Great Devourer started to come out of the ground, Pythor said, “Yes… yes! It’s working!” When the Great Devourer finally erupted out from its underground prison, Wu turned to the ninja and said, “Go ninja, go!” Later, in the Titanium Ninja, Rebooted, the Overlord said the same thing as Pythor as he watched the making of the golden armour. As he was dying, Zane made one of his most well-known quotes: “I am a Nindroid, and ninja never quit! Go ninja, go!!” I’m not sure if it’s just a coincidence or not, but it’s kind of weird.
- Being a robot, Zane repeats things others have told him. In the beginning of the Titanium Ninja (Rebooted), Kai told Zane, “This isn’t about numbers, Zane! It’s about family!” Zane repeated this to the Overlord, minus his name. In Return of the Overlord, Rise of the Spinjitzu Master, Lloyd told the rest of the team that “Ninja never quit,” and Zane also said this to the Overlord.
- In the season the Tournament of Elements, Tox (master of poison) has the same hairstyle P.I.X.A.L. does.
- P.I.X.A.L. is an Android, and her name stands for Primary Interactive X-ternal Assistant Lifeform. Curiously, Android released a phone called the Pixel through Google recently…
- Zane is my favorite ninja. I don’t know why you needed to know that.
- Kai is my sister’s favorite ninja. I don’t know why you needed to know that, either.
- I’m not sure why, but pretty much everyone I know likes Kai the best. But then, my friends and sister consider themselves hotheaded, something I can’t say about myself.
- Once again, I’m not sure why you need to know this, but my favorite season is Rebooted. Everyone else I know who’s seen or heard of all the seasons likes the Tournament of Elements. Strangely, this is my least favorite season.
- Cyrus Borg sounds a lot like ‘cyborg’. Here’s the dictionary definition for ‘cyborg’: a fictional or hypothetical person whose physical abilities are extended beyond normal human limitations by mechanical elements built into the body. When Cyrus Borg was turned into the Overborg, he had mechanical legs (since he’d been disabled his whole life), and he had a headpiece with the ability to shoot lasers similar to those the Nindroids had.
- If you can’t keep track of which ninja is which, maybe this will help you: Jay is blue like a blue jay; Cole’s element is earth, and coal is an earthy material; Lloyd’s name sounds like his father’s old title, Lord Garmadon; Kai’s name can mean ‘fire’, which is his element; Nya’s the only girl, so she’s pretty easy to keep straight; and ‘Zane’ is like the word ‘zany’, meaning weird. Zane has been called both ‘weirdo’ and ‘the weird white one’ before, so it fits.
So that’s all I have for now! These aren’t proven facts, just things I thought about as I watched (and rewatched) the show. I’ll probably update this again soon as I learn more oddball stuff about Ninjago I didn’t notice before, since sometimes you can see things you missed if you rewatch or reread something.
